The Forty Part Motet (2001) by Janet Cardiff is a reworking of Spem in Alium, a choral piece of music composed by Thomas Tallis. Spem in Alium is a renaissance motet written for a choir of 40 voices.

Cardiff recorded each individual part separately. Then, in the gallery, they are played back through 40 speakers arranged in a circle. This allows for the music to be felt structurally, as the audience moves from speaker to speaker.
